8 Celebrities That Call Chicago Home

1. Barack Obama

Our very own President calls Chicago home. Before he became POTU, Barack and Michelle lived in Hyde Park, a community located on the South Side of Chicago. While there, Michelle worked at the University of Chicago Medical Center and Barack taught at the University of Chicago Law School. Both of the couple’s daughters, Malia Ann and Sasha (Natasha) were born while the family lived in Chicago.

The President still has a home in Hyde Park, even though he’s been living in the White House. The address is 5046 South Greenwood Avenue.

2. Tina Fey

For awhile in the 90’s funny woman Tina Fey called Chi-City home. Although Fey was born in Philadelphia, she moved to Chicago to advance her career. She worked in improv with legendary troupe Second City before being signed onto Saturday Night Live in New York City.

She still adores Chicago. Some of her favorite places include Golden Apple Diner and the Athenian Room.

3. Harrison Ford

Another famous actor and producer that calls Chicago home is Harrison Ford. Harrison was actually born in Chicago at the Swedish Covenant Hospital in 1942. He lived in the city until moving to Los Angeles to become an actor.

The man famous for playing Han Solo in Star Wars explained to Michigan Avenue Mag,

“I love Chicago. I love the energy of the place, the architecture, the people, the rigor of the place. Bitter cold in the winter, fierce winds, hot summers.”

4. Walt Disney

The magical creator of Mickey Mouse was born in Chicago! Walt Disney was born on December 5th 1901. The family moved to the city in 1890 and later had Elias Jr. (Walt Disney).

Since 2013, a group had been dedicated to restoring the home which Flora and Elias Disney, Walt’s parents, built. According to the website Walt Disney Birthplace Restoration, the renovated home will be “a living source of joy and inspiration and will promote the importance of family to nurture creativity, collaboration, and innovation in children.”

The birthplace of Walt is located at the corner of Tripp Avenue and Palmer Street, right outside of Downtown.

5. (and 6.) Joan and John Cusack

Joan and John Cusack are both famous actors and siblings that currently live in Chicago. They were raised in Evanston, Illinois and have later lived in the Gold Coast as well as on Greenview Avenue on the North Side.

John is known for his work in the movies Say Anything, Being John Malkovich, High Fidelity, and many others. Joan, his sister, is also famous.

She was a cast member of Saturday Night Live and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for the films Working Girl and In & Out.

7. Jennifer Hudson

Raised on the South Side of Chicago, American Idol finalist Jennifer Hudson has made her mark on the entertainment industry. From humble beginnings, she’s gone on to make movies and two albums.

Jennifer was born in Chicago on September 12th 1981. After growing up in the area, she left for college but later signed on with a Chicago-based record company in 2002. In 2004, the singer took on American Idol and became a household name.

She’s since won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress and a Golden Globe for her movie, Dreamgirls.

8. Mr. T

While walking around the city, you may just run into 80’s star Mr. T! Laurence Tureaud, nicknamed Mr. T, is a popular actor and T.V. personality. Helping to develop the fun phrase “I pity the fool,” Mr. T is now a household name.

What some are surprised to hear is that Mr. T was born in Chicago and will be helping remodel homes there soon! His own television show, I Pity The Tool, will follow the actor as he helps Chicagoans remodel their homes.

Mr. T was born in 1952 and lived with his eleven brothers and sisters in the Robert Taylor Homes. He gained fame after working as a bouncer and later as a celebrity bodyguard.
